Ashtanga Yoga: from the sound of the breath to the silence of the body

starts Friday 23 may 2014 at 18:30

workshop with Arnaud Kancel (in English)

ATTENTION!

The location of the workshop has changed from what we originally posted:

Friday night's program will now be at our rue Louvigny location. Saturday and Sunday will now be at our city center - avenue Marie-Thérèse location.

THEME

Often described as an art of living, yoga is a mental attitude based on attention. It is with this awareness that any practice, soft or intense, reveals its depth.

This seminar offers five sessions with a common approach to technique based on listening and introspection.

Accessible for beginners to advanced.

Program

Day Time Session
Friday 18:30-20:30

Pranayama and mantras (2h)

A complete breathing technique to acquire more energy and breathing capacity. This simple pranayama can be practiced by yourself to gain endurance and power in your postural practice. (45 min)

Mantras and chanting known as the yoga of sound. (1:15)

This is a nasalized chanting technique that is practiced sitting motionless with eyes closed. Based more on vibration than sound, this chanting technique is a Yoga in itself.

Saturday 9:00-11:30

Lotus series (2h30)

This session begins with a theoretical course on the biomechanics of the knees and hips, giving the key points of different sitting postures of yoga.

We will see how to open the hips and how to practice with or without weakness or pathology of the knee.

Then, based on Ashtanga Yoga practice, we will practice different variations of the seated lotus. This class is suitable for everyone, providing options for all levels.

Saturday 14:30-16:30

Hip opening and deep relaxation (2h)

This session explores opening the hips through slow and precise practices coming from Iyengar Yoga and classical Hatha Yoga. We will make the link with the Ashtanga Yoga practice to understand how to manage various postures. After guided meditation and pranayama exercises, the practice will lead to variations of the savasana posture.

Sunday 9:00-11:30

Vinyasa: approaching advanced postures (2h30)

From the 1st and 2nd series of Ashtanga Yoga, we will explore variations in order to understand and to feel the logic of different related asanas (postures).

A conscious approach to the practice will enable the opening of the body very gradually and make advanced Hatha Yoga postures accessible to all, regardless of level.

Sunday 14:30-16:30

Alignment and adjustments (2h)

We will study the anatomy of pranayama and the biomechanics of the human body.

This session explores the major bases of the practice and teaching of postural Yoga. We will go through a series of exercises that provide the key to understanding the direction that governs the asanas in order to understand the postures in "families" . We will go into adjustment and alignment techniques.

This session will enrich the understanding for teachers as well as students and help clarify for everyone alignment details which will allow a feeling of well-being in a posture.

Arnaud was invited to demonstrate the Ashtanga primary series in Caroline Boulinguez’s DVD on Ashtanga Yoga. You can view this DVD in French on YouTube. The primary series starts at the 10:00 minute mark.

Style: Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga vinyasa is a hatha yoga practice transmitted to Pattabhi Jois from the great yoga master Krishnamacharya. It is for students seeking an invigorating approach that purifies, stimulates and energizes. It consists of postures practiced in a fluid rhythm with a concentrated breath, steady gaze, and internal contractions to direct vital energy. Due to the dynamic nature of this practice, one feels completely energized and purified in each cell of the body and also in the mind. Go to the Ashtanga yoga page.

Teacher: Arnaud Kancel

Arnaud Kancel Arnaud discovered Ashtanga yoga in Dharamsala, India and later returned to Mysore to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. In 2003, he founded the Arjuna Shala in Montpellier and leads courses in various cities in France and abroad (India, Peru, Greece, Czech Republic, etc.). In 2012, he created Ashtanga Sadhana teacher training school. His teaching approach combines bio-mechanics and the aspect of energy in an attempt to create unity of body, breath and consciousness.
