About Yoga

The word Yoga means "to yoke" - in essence, unite. Through the practice of yoga, one unites body, mind, and soul.

Initially, one’s practice brings a keener awareness of the physical body. The exercises keep one’s body young, dynamic, supple, strong, and healthy. In this state, the practitioner is able to experience more subtle aspects of being.

All yoga postures, combined with proper breathing, improve the circulatory, endocrine, and nervous systems. Digestion and assimilation are also stimulated as well as the elimination of toxins. The lymph system, the body’s defense mechanism, is thus far better able to prevent the onset of illness and will accelerate recovery when symptoms begin. Yoga also helps the acquisition of a graceful posture and ease of movement.

Yoga is available to all. Regular practice will bring great benefits regardless of age or condition in the form of a general sense of well-being, a feeling of serenity, self-confidence and optimism. In short, one achieves psycho-physical balance.

La Source offers two distinct approaches to yoga - the Ashtanga Vinyasa and the Sivananda methods. The Ashtanga Vinyasa method is composed of a series of continually flowing and heat-generating postures (Asanas) connected by sustained conscious breathing, constant focus and specific contractions to direct vital energy throughout the body. The Sivananda method includes a sequence of 12 basic postures along with pranayama and meditation. The sequence is balanced and methodical with relaxation between postures to allow the absorption of "prana" (or vital energy) from each posture.
