Introduction to Vinyasa Krama Yoga

This 2-hour workshop is suitable for beginners in yoga and the more experienced practitioner wanting to try Vinyasa Krama yoga for the first time. In the session, we will practice some of the key features of this system:
- Brief talk on who was the yoga master Sri T Krishnamacharya and his relevance to modern yoga practice in the West
- What yoga is and how it works
- How is yoga different to western sports exercise
- The breathing technique of Ujjayi breath
- Practicing asana with variations (vinyasa)
- The art form of constructing a yoga practice so that it is relevant and appropriate for you (krama)
- The 10 key sequences of the vinyasa krama system
- The use of counter-postures
- Transitional movements between sequences
- The importance of mental focus on the breath
- Introduction to breathing exercises (pranayama)
- A short meditation, learning its importance in daily life
- The opportunity to ask questions

Style: Vinyasa Krama Yoga
Vinyasa Krama Yoga develops strength and flexibility. It improves circulation of blood, lymph and life energy (prana). It's a simple, enjoyable and effective way of exercising all joints, muscles and tissues of the body without stressing the heart. The movements are slow and synchronised with ujjayi breathing which concentrates the mind and brings it into a state of peace. With its emphasis on synchronised breathing and moving, the system prepares the person to sit with steadiness and comfort for the more subtle practices of pranayama and meditation which are included in each class. The whole process gradually transforms the body and mind, releasing old patterns of mental tension and dysfunctional patterns of movement. Go to the Vinyasa Krama Yoga page.
Teacher: Steven James
Steven became interested in yoga in 1997 and practiced with several teachers from different lineages. He was inspired by the yoga teacher Stephen Brandon and the method of Vinyasa Krama yoga that he teaches in the UK. Steven completed a 200-hour teaching program with him and received his diploma in 2010. He has participated in study programs with Ramaswami on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Vedic Chanting, Yoga therapy (cikitsa) and continues to expand his knowledge of the Vinysa Krama system with him. He is grateful to his teachers for sharing their knowledge with such clarity, devotion and respect. He endeavours to do the same, so that others may enjoy the many benefits of yoga.
