"Subtle Strength": The Pelvic Floor

Sunday 09 august 09:00 - 12:00

The "Subtle Strength" Workshop Series overview

Students of all levels are welcome to this in-depth workshop series, where Marija guides you toward a subtler experience of asana through deeper presence, greater sensitivity to breath and work on internal alignment. Each module covers a coherent topic and relates it to asana and/or breathing. In each module, the workshop-style exploration is combined with dedicated time for practice, in order to deepen and integrate the techniques explored. You will leave inspired to take a new lens and lighten up your practice!

Each module covers a coherent theme which is applied as it pertains to asana and/or breathing. Modules are interrelated, but can be taken as stand-alone as well.

Module 1: Pelvic Floor, Legs, and Exhalation

We focus on the pelvic floor. In posture, we sharpen the awareness of the pelvic floor and its relation to the legs, feet, and pelvis, while in breathing we look at the relationship to the exhalation phase.

Practices for awareness, mobilisation, elasticity and strengthening of the pelvic floor are followed by studying how legs affect your pelvic floor in standing. We then work on qualities of the exhale supporting awareness and activation of the pelvic floor in isolation, and then in forward bending to discover the soft yet very powerful experience of grounding, which is a major underlying theme of Ashtanga's primary series.

The new insights are interwoven together in a regulated ujjayi-based asana practice, followed by pranayama and meditation.

Style: Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga vinyasa is a hatha yoga practice transmitted to Pattabhi Jois from the great yoga master Krishnamacharya. It is for students seeking an invigorating approach that purifies, stimulates and energizes. It consists of postures practiced in a fluid rhythm with a concentrated breath, steady gaze, and internal contractions to direct vital energy. Due to the dynamic nature of this practice, one feels completely energized and purified in each cell of the body and also in the mind. Go to the Ashtanga yoga page.

Teacher: Marija Bjekovic

Marija Bjekovic Marija practiced Ashtanga vinyasa yoga since 2008 under the guidance of Denise Pesch. Over time, she complemented Ashtanga with Iyengar Yoga (with Constantinos Giannetakis) and with Vinyasa Krama. This brought an understanding of how to wisely adapt the physical practice in order to emphasize strength, mobility, mental focus or healing as needed. With gradual extension to other limbs of yoga, her practice became a means to balance energy, reconnect to a state of deep inner peace, and relate to the world more meaningfully. Her teaching path started after 200 hours of Ashtanga yoga teacher training with John Scott and Lucy Crawford Scott in 2015. Over the years, she continued her studies and teaching within the lineage of Sri T. Krishnamcharya (the father of modern yoga and a pioneer in yoga therapy) through Srivatsa Ramaswami and A.G. Mohan. She is currently following an 800-hour Svastha Yoga Therapy Foundations program with A.G. Mohan and his family. Go to Marija's page.
